I believe it's a bit different though in The Netherlands than Italy. Dutch clubs aren't allowed to have a negative bank balance or they'll get sanctions and penalised. Our worst debt was 30 million Euro's which is peanuts to most Italian clubs I guess.

We have now cleared it with the many outgoing transfers and our great youth academy. That really saved us.

With the FFP things are changing also for italian clubs but it's true that for decades they let us splash cash in every way possible without control. You can see the effects of such mismanagement, italian football is nowadays nowhere near its old level.
